Already described as extremely cinematic, Blue Bolero by Chris Standring is sure to be one of the most talked about releases of 2010. Although the distinctive vibe that has marked out Standring as one of the most soulful smooth jazz guitarists around remains clearly discernable, for Blue Bolero he adds to it with compositions, arrangements and choice of instruments that show off a different side to his musical persona.

A case in point is the eight minute six second ‘Overture’. In the way striking string arrangements blend with enticing guitar and flashes of acoustic bass this is a tune that can be rightly regarded as a metaphor for the entire album while the title song, with acoustic bass from Larry Steen and violin by Barbra Porter, demonstrates, perhaps for the first time ever, how contemporary jazz can fuse with classical influences in the most perfect of ways.

This is the fifth book in Steven Torres' excellent series, though I believe it was the first written.

Sheriff Luis Gonzalo of Angustias, Puerto Rico, helps recover the bodies of illegal Dominican immigrants washed up on shore near his sister-in-law's village. He can tell that one was murdered, but when he tries to coordinate with coroners and local police, he finds that the body has disappeared.

As he pursues the matter, he receives warnings from a youthful photographer and threatening phone calls that lead him to suspect police corruption. This is a most promising start to a new procedural series that stars a dedicated, sensible "hero" in an almost quaint but decidedly unique locale.

If you haven't read the previous books in the Precinct Puerto Rico series, that's no barrier to reading this one. It's a good place to start. Check it out.

Recently the EURO CRIME blog featured a POST ON SOCCER (or football as it is referred to in Europe) mysteries. This was not supposed to be an all inclusive post, but since I have a collection of soccer mysteries, I immediately noticed a few notable omissions.

Marked Man was the first of a series of three soccer mysteries by Mel Stein. In his everyday life, Stein is a solicitor specializing in sports law, but he is best known as the personal manager for English soccer superstars Paul Gascoigne and Chris Waddle.

Stein’s series features disgraced soccer star turned private investigator Mark Rossetti, and the novels were filled with insider knowledge of how soccer teams operate and the behind the scenes dramas.

MARKED MAN

To the world of football [soccer], Mark Rossetti is a dead man. Ten years ago, on the verge of an international career, he was banned from the game for a crime he didn’t commit. Now, as he struggles to make a living as a private investigator, he’s just a distant shadow in the memories of Hertsmere United’s more nostalgic fans.

Most are far more concerned with Rossetti’s old club’s current dramas, and with its star player, the mercurial, magical Mickey Wayne. Especially since Hertsmere United – only recently rocketed into the league, more recently still in the top half of the Premiership – have a miraculous chance of FA [Football Association] cup [trophy] glory.

Written with the authority of an author who knows the game from the inside, marked man is both a page-turning thriller and a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the business that is football.

Marked Man and the other Mark Rossetti soccer/football thrillers are nowhere near as accomplished as Dick Francis’ racing thriller, but what sports thrillers are up to that standard – few if any. On the other hand, author Stien does right by making soccer integral to the plot and not just a background against which to play out a compelety unrelated story – my biggest bugaboo when it comes to sports mysteries.

AGATHA CHRISTIE 1900 - 1910

"Life took on a completely different complexion after my father's death. I stepped out of my child's world, a world of security and thoughtlessness, to enter the fringes of the world of reality"

Agatha was eleven years old when her father died in November 1901, Queen Victoria had died that January and it was the start of a brand new century. Still a child, though only just, Agatha's experience of her father's death was limited, kept away from the funeral by her mother and firm in the belief that he had gone to heaven Agatha was able to handle his passing as well as could be expected from a child her age. But it hit her mother hard and it was the way in which she coped with the emotional and also financial situation now confronting the family, that was to mark the start of Agatha's maturation:

"My mother had bad heart attacks since my father's death. They came on her with no warning, and nothing that the doctors gave her helped. I knew for the first time what it was to feel anxiety for other people... By the time I was thirteen or fourteen I felt myself enormously advanced in age and experience. I no longer thought of myself as protected by another person. I had my own protective feelings. I felt responsible for my mother"

Agatha's sister Margaret had by this time married and moved away. The financial problems imposed on them after her father's death meant they had to economise, leaving her mother with few social excursions and almost housebound, unable to walk the hills of Torquay without troubling her heart. Agatha on the other hand found the cutbacks easier and happily spent the next few years bathing in the summer, roller skating in the winter and reading numerous books including the Sherlock Holmes stories and the works of Alexandre Dumas.

Agatha had also started to develop her perspective on marriage and relationships, in fact, she had always imagined marriage over a career. A child of Victorian Britain it was no surprise that she should aspire to marry, and place such emphasis upon it - though not so for the Suffragettes, the Women's Social and Political Union that began life in 1903, their aims and objectives in stark contrast to those of the Victorians. Even later in life Christie's views on women's equality erred on the side of nineteenth century thinking, though as unfashionable as those views now seem, hers were born out of a traditional sense of romance and love without which some of her most popular stories could never have been written.

At fifteen Agatha and her mother let Ashfield once more and moved to Paris, where Agatha attended school, though her dreams of becoming a famous pianist were dashed by persistent stage fright. At seventeen Agatha's mother suffered a serious illness that no doctor could diagnose correctly except to recommend moving to a warmer climate to aid recovery. Cairo was chosen, a place for her mother to rest but also a place for Agatha's next stage of development:

"My mother was anxious that I should have what was considered a young girl's birthright, that is to say that she should emerge like a butterfly from a chrysalis, from a schoolgirl to a young lady of the world, meeting other girls and plenty of young men, and, to put it plainly, be given her chance of finding a suitable mate."

Much dancing and conversing with eligible and not so eligible young men later, a wiser Agatha returned to England. While visiting friends and attending parties she would often meet potential suitors, though none as yet she'd taken much of a shine to. One unlucky chap, in whom Agatha was so disinterested that she couldn't recall his name 'Mr S.' was to experience such rejection:

"...'I can't wait. I have to tell you now. I am madly in love with you. You must marry me. From the first moment I saw you, coming down to dinner, I knew that you were the one woman in the world for me'. It was sometime before I could interrupt the flow of words, and say with icy coldness: 'It is very kind of you, Mr S., I am sure, and I deeply appreciate it, but I am afraid the answer is no.'"

Agatha was in no hurry, there were plenty of dances to come, and it would be at a dance a few years later where she was to meet a young British army officer by the name of Christie.

The closing of the decade saw the introduction of the mass produced motor car, then two years later the aeroplane. Technological momentum was accompanying a world trend towards pacts and alliances between countries vying to build empires, the new century was about to explode into war, an event that would once again shape Agatha's journey towards becoming the most successful author of all time.

Vernard ‘Get’ McGetty is back from serving in Afghanistan, back dealing drugs in Detroit and looking to move up with his buddy JT, a guy he met in Kandahar who also happens to be the leader of the Saints of Hell—a notorious Ontario biker gang currently in the process of taking over all North of the border drug traffic.
